Post-Operative Manual Lymph Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, specialized massage technique designed to stimulate the natural flow of lymph fluid through the lymphatic system. Post-operatively, MLD is commonly used to support healing, reduce swelling (edema), and minimize bruising after surgical procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty), facelift, or orthopedic surgeries.

Helps prevent fluid accumulation and promotes faster drainage of excess fluid.

Accelerates Healing:
Improves circulation and immune response, supporting the body’s natural healing process.

Minimizes Discomfort:
Gently alleviates pressure and tension from inflamed or swollen areas.

Improves Scar Healing:
Enhances tissue regeneration, potentially reducing scar formation and fibrosis.

Enhances Surgical Outcomes:
Contributes to smoother contours and more consistent results, especially in cosmetic surgery.

How It Works

MLD uses light, rhythmic hand movements to guide lymph fluid toward functioning lymph nodes. The technique is non-invasive, relaxing, and specifically tailored to the patient’s post-operative condition and tolerance. Sessions typically begin a few days after surgery, as recommended by the surgeon, and may be continued for several weeks to optimize results.

Important Notes about Manual Lymph Drainage

MLD should always be performed by a trained and certified therapist.

It is not painful and does not involve deep tissue pressure.

Clearance from your surgeon is necessary before beginning post-operative MLD.
